The UConn softball team started the Chanticleer Showdown with a split, falling to Wisconsin 5-1 in game one but bouncing back to defeat Bowling Green 8-7 in game two. In game one, graduate student Payton Kinney threw 5.2 innings, giving up one earned run. Junior Hope Jenkins hit a home run to open the scoring for UConn. In game two, redshirt-sophomore Sydnee Koosh started and UConn took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. Bowling Green chipped away at the lead, tying the game in the fifth and taking the lead in the sixth. However, UConn rallied in the bottom of the seventh, with Kaiea Higa hitting a solo home run to tie the game and freshman Cat Petteys hitting a walk-off single to score the winning run.
Notable performances included Kinney giving up her first earned run of the season, Rosie Garcia and Lexi Hastings extending their hitting streaks, Hope Jenkins hitting her third home run of the season, and Cat Petteys coming through with her second career walk-off hit.
UConn will continue in the Chanticleer Showdown with a rematch against Bowling Green on March 1 at 12:30 PM, followed by a game against Coastal Carolina at 6:00 PM. Fans can follow updates on UConn Softball’s social media pages.
