Dario Highsmith Jr., a former star football player and Middletown High School graduate, has been appointed as the new head football coach at MHS. Highsmith, who was named the Gatorade Connecticut Football Player of the Year in 2013-2014, returns to his alma mater with coaching experience from Wesleyan University and Don Bosco Preparatory School in New Jersey.
Middletown Superintendent of Schools Alberto Vazquez Matos praised Highsmith’s journey from player to coach as an example of excellence in the school system. Highsmith expressed his excitement about coming back to coach at MHS, highlighting his commitment to developing young leaders on and off the field.
Highsmith’s appointment has been met with enthusiasm from the Middletown community, with Athletic Director Elisha De Jesus praising his passion, knowledge, and commitment to the development of student-athletes. Highsmith’s plans include meeting the team and starting off-season preparations immediately.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies from Wesleyan in 2020, Highsmith currently serves as a program coordinator and lead recruiter for Wesleyan Upward Bound, a mentoring program for underrepresented high school students. His return to Middletown High School as head football coach is seen as a significant moment for the community and a chance for him to give back to the place that shaped him both as an athlete and a person.
