During a two-day state visit to Portugal, Macron emphasizes Ukraine as a crucial battle for Europe’s future.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited Portugal for a two-day state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and encouraging European unity, amidst uncertainty surrounding Ukraine under the Trump administration. Macron was welcomed by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa outside the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon.

The visit comes at a critical time as European leaders seek increased unity in response to shifting US foreign policy under Donald Trump’s second term. Tensions have risen as Trump threatened to withdraw from NATO, impose tariffs on the EU, and seemingly sidelined European involvement in peace negotiations in Ukraine.

Macron recently visited Trump in Washington to stress the importance of supporting Ukraine and is set to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House. Macron emphasized the need for European unity in the face of uncertainty and will continue to advocate for cooperation in the region.

During Macron’s visit to Porto, he is expected to sign various bilateral agreements relating to political, economic, and security issues with Portuguese officials. Discussions with Prime Minister Montenegro may also focus on European defense and security matters. Macron’s visit underscores the importance of European solidarity in navigating turbulent international relations and ensuring stability in the region.
