CLEPA, the European Association of Automotive Suppliers, has joined other industry stakeholders in calling for an early review of the European Union’s CO2 emissions standards. The Association argues that a technology-neutral approach is needed to ensure fairness and flexibility in achieving the ambitious emissions reduction targets set by the EU.
The current CO2 standards, which were established in 2019, are designed to reduce emissions from cars and vans by 37.5% by 2030. However, CLEPA believes that these targets may not be achievable without a technology-neutral approach that allows for the use of different technologies and solutions across the automotive industry.
CLEPA’s plea for an early review of the standards comes at a critical time for the automotive sector, as it continues to adapt to the ongoing transition to electric and low-emission vehicles. The Association argues that a technology-neutral approach will encourage innovation and competition, ultimately leading to more sustainable and cost-effective solutions for reducing emissions.
In a statement, CLEPA emphasized the importance of collaboration between policymakers, industry stakeholders, and other key players in the automotive sector to ensure the success of future emissions reduction initiatives. The Association also stressed the need for clear and consistent regulations that provide a level playing field for all companies involved in the production and distribution of vehicles.
Moving forward, CLEPA plans to engage with EU policymakers and other stakeholders to advocate for a technology-neutral review of the CO2 standards. By working together, the Association believes that the automotive industry can continue to make progress towards achieving its emissions reduction goals in a way that is fair, sustainable, and beneficial for all parties involved.
