NFL Announces Plan to Incorporate Measurement Technology by 2025

The NFL announced a new rule change involving the use of technology for virtual line-to-gain measurements starting in 2025, following a controversial call in the Bills’ AFC Championship loss. The new Hawk-Eye tracking system from Sony was tested in the 2024 preseason and showed promising results in reducing measurement time. All NFL stadiums will be equipped with cameras to implement the technology.
Additionally, NFL executive Troy Vincent addressed potential rule changes, emphasizing the importance of keeping onside kicks in the game. While there hasn’t been much discussion on a fourth-and-X option for possession, replay assist expansion is being considered for 2025 to address incorrect flags thrown for various penalties. However, there is no appetite to use video replay to throw a flag directly.
The Competition Committee will further discuss these topics in upcoming meetings, offering valuable insight into the direction the league is headed. While no concrete changes have been decided yet, the focus is on enhancing officiating accuracy and efficiency. Fans can expect continued development and potential implementation of these rule changes as the season progresses.
