Special Education Funding Bill Worth $40 Million Approved by State Senate

Connecticut State Senate passed two wide-ranging bills, one including $40 million for local school districts’ special education costs. Governor Ned Lamont opposed the funding, citing budget concerns, whereas State Senate President Martin Looney emphasized the dire need for the funding to address shortfalls. Despite the governor’s opposition, the bill passed both chambers unanimously. In a separate bill, funding was allocated for Planned Parenthood, LGBTQ organizations, a ban on Chinese-made drones for law enforcement, and direct payment to UConn student athletes. Republicans criticized the bundling of unrelated measures into one bill, arguing they should be voted on separately. State Senator Rob Sampson called it “Christmas for various entities aligned with the Democratic majority.” Looney defended the funding for LGBTQ groups and Planned Parenthood, stating they are under attack at the national level. Governor Lamont, currently in India on a trade mission, has not indicated whether he will veto or sign the legislation that includes special education funding and provisions for Prospect Medical Holdings.
