Former Connecticut high school student, Aleysha Ortiz, is suing her teachers for allowing her to graduate without being able to read or write due to her learning disability. Ortiz, 19, is seeking $3 million in damages for alleged bullying, harassment, and negligence by staff at Hartford Public Schools district. She claims that her special education teacher, Tilda Santiago, yelled at and humiliated her instead of providing support. Despite struggling with dyslexia, ADHD, and a speech impediment, Ortiz graduated without basic literacy skills. She spent hours outside of school trying to catch up, managing to improve her grades but feeling emotionally scarred by her high school experience. Ortiz hopes that her lawsuit will bring attention to flaws in the Hartford education system and ensure that future students do not have to endure similar hardships. The Hartford Board of Education, City of Hartford, and Tilda Santiago have not yet responded to requests for comment on the lawsuit.
