British couple Peter and Barbie Reynolds, who have been running education programs in Afghanistan for nearly two decades, were detained by the Taliban earlier this month. The couple, in their 70s, decided to stay in Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover in 2021, despite the risks involved.
The Reynolds were working on various educational projects through their company Rebuild, which they founded in 2009. One program focused on teaching parenting skills to mothers. Their daughter, Sarah Entwistle, expressed concern for their well-being, especially since her father recently suffered from a stroke and is on medication.
The children have written to the Taliban, urging for their parents’ release. The family emphasized the couple’s commitment to respecting and following the laws of Afghanistan. They also highlighted the previous support the Taliban had shown for their training efforts.
The British Foreign Office confirmed that they are supporting the family of the detained couple but did not provide further details. The office advises against all travel to Afghanistan due to the increased risk of detention and the limited ability to provide consular support in the country.
The Taliban government and local officials in Bamiyan, where the Reynolds were detained, have not responded to requests for comments. The United States, like the UK, also cautions against travel to Afghanistan for American citizens due to security concerns. Several Westerners have been detained in the country since the Taliban takeover.
