Connecticut Senators Advocate for Ethan’s Law to be Enacted Nationally

Connecticut lawmakers are heading to Washington, D.C. to reintroduce Ethan’s Law, named after Guilford teen Ethan Song. This bill aims to establish federal regulations for safe gun storage and impose strict penalties for any violations. The law, which is currently in place in Connecticut, would require guns to be stored safely across the United States.

Ethan’s Law was inspired by the tragic death of Ethan Song, who was killed in 2018 by an unsecured gun. U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, and Kristin Song, Ethan’s mother, are leading the charge for this legislation on the federal level. Despite passing in the House of Representatives in 2022 as part of the Protecting Our Kids Act, it failed to pass in the U.S. Senate.

The bill would mandate gun owners to secure their firearms with a safety device if a minor could access the gun without permission or if a resident of the home is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. States would also be encouraged to implement and enforce their own safe gun storage laws. Congressman DeLauro has garnered support from over 60 colleagues for the bill’s reintroduction, with the ultimate goal of preventing unintentional shootings, suicides, and other gun-related violence.
