Bridgeport arena hosts Connecticut’s largest robotics competition

The largest robotics competition in Connecticut, the VEX Robotics V5 State Championships, took place at the Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport for its second day. The competition involved high school and middle school students who spent months designing, building, and testing their robots to score the most rings possible. The tournament included 110 teams from nearly 50 communities across the state, showcasing the growth of the competition in recent years. One team, the Danbury ‘Z’ team, has been working on their robot ‘Zero-Gravity’ since May.

The competition not only helps students develop communication and team skills but also encourages young women to enter the typically male-dominated STEM sector. Participants like Christopher Borges and Izzah Nishad from Danbury High School highlighted the teamwork and inclusivity of the competition. Five middle school teams and nine high school teams from the tournament will advance to the World Robotics Championships in Dallas, Texas on May 6. The growth and success of the competition demonstrate the increasing interest and talent in robotics among Connecticut students.
