The UConn softball team concluded the Mercer Softball Invitational with a split, defeating Mercer 2-1 but falling to Alabama State 10-8. Junior Hope Jenkins had a strong outing in the first game, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. The offense was led by Grace Jenkins, who hit her fifth home run of the season and had a team-high 18 RBI. In game two, graduate student Payton Kinney pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, supported by Rosie Garcia’s hitting and Sydnee Koosh’s first career save. UConn now moves to 8-5 overall this season.
The Huskies will now head to South Carolina for the Chanticleer Showdown hosted by Coastal Carolina University. They will face off against Wisconsin and Bowling Green on Friday, February 28. Payton Kinney has yet to give up an earned run this season, while Rosie Garcia has a five-game hitting streak and Lexi Hastings has hits in 11 out of 13 games played.
