The American Federation of Government Employees and National Treasury Employees Union criticized Musk and the Trump administration for the email, calling it cruel and disrespectful to federal employees who serve the American people. The NTEU advised members not to respond to the email, stating that OPM directives do not create obligations for FDA employees.
The email comes amid Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency’s efforts to make cuts to the federal workforce, including layoffs and dismantling of agencies like USAID. Over 3 million people are employed by the federal government, according to Pew Research Center. The email has sparked controversy and pushback from unions representing federal employees, who see it as an attack on their service and dedication to the country.
