Convicted ‘Cannibal Killer’ Granted Conditional Release Ten Years After Consuming Victim’s Eye and Brain

Connecticut’s notorious “Cannibal Killer,” Tyree Smith, who was institutionalized after murdering and eating parts of a homeless man in 2011, has been granted conditional release by the state’s Psychiatric Security Review Board. Doctors at Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown, where Smith has been receiving treatment, believe he has been rehabilitated with medication, and consider him a positive influence on other patients.

However, local politicians, including Republican state Sen. Paul Cicarella, are strongly opposed to the decision, citing concerns about public safety should Smith stop taking his medication. Smith will initially receive supervised day passes but will be confined to the hospital grounds. As he progresses, he may eventually be granted more privileges, including supervised off-site visits.

Angel Gonzalez, the victim’s sister-in-law, expressed doubts about Smith’s rehabilitation during the hearing, questioning whether he could commit such crimes again. Connecticut politicians are united in their opposition to Smith’s release, stating that it poses a significant risk to public safety and sends a negative message to victims of violent crimes and their families.
