President Donald Trump has terminated Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman CQ Brown Jr. as part of his ongoing effort to reshape the federal government through administration shake-ups. Trump thanked Brown for his service of over 40 years, including his time as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Brown, the second Black person to hold the role, was informed of his firing by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in a cordial phone call. Trump plans to nominate Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine to replace Brown, citing his experience as an accomplished pilot and national security expert.
Hegseth also announced the firing of Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations, and Gen. James Slife, Air Force vice chief of staff. Nominations are being requested for their replacements, as well as for the judge advocates general for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Caine’s background includes serving in Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq as a special ops commander.
The administration’s focus on new leadership is aimed at emphasizing the military’s core mission of deterring, fighting, and winning wars. Hegseth expressed confidence in Caine as a leader who embodies the warfighter ethos and is dedicated to meeting the challenges of the current moment. The changes at the top levels of military leadership reflect Trump’s commitment to redefining national security priorities under new leadership.
