Is there a chance for change? – NBC Connecticut

In response to President Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs on Mexican goods, more than 2,500 Mexican troops have been deployed to the border city of Ciudad Juárez. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is deploying a total of 10,000 troops along Mexico’s border with the United States. The move has been praised by the White House as a victory in the effort to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

Critics, however, argue that the troops will do little to stop these issues and instead militarize the border. While illegal border crossings have decreased, some believe that organized crime will find new ways to bypass the increased security measures.

One human smuggler interviewed by NBC News believes the troops will not make a difference. Despite facing a significant decline in his business due to Trump’s policies, he remains committed to his operations. He also believes that Trump’s focus on closing the border is misguided and that addressing corruption in countries further south would be more effective in addressing migration issues.
