In an effort to combat a recent outbreak of dengue fever, village officials in Addition Hills, Philippines, have implemented a unique programme that rewards residents for capturing mosquitoes. Participants receive one Philippine peso for every five mosquitoes captured, with one resident even earning nine pesos for turning in 45 larvae. The village chair, Carlito Cernal, organised the initiative in response to a rise in dengue cases in the area, with the Department of Health recording over 28,000 cases nationwide in January alone.
However, concerns have been raised about the unintended consequences of the bounty programme. Department spokesperson Albert Domingo warned that it could potentially lead to mosquito breeding for profit. Some social media users have also criticized the initiative, citing the need for more sustainable solutions such as regular clean-ups of stagnant water areas and early reporting of dengue cases.
Despite the backlash, Cernal insists that the programme was created with good intentions. The project has garnered attention both locally and internationally, with residents lining up to participate and receive their rewards. As dengue cases continue to increase across the Philippines, it remains to be seen whether this initiative will have a lasting impact on combating the outbreak.
