US universities crack down on pro-Palestine students with suspensions and campus bans | Latest updates on Donald Trump

Student protesters across several campuses, including the University of Minnesota and New York University, are facing harsh punishments for their actions. At the University of Minnesota, seven students face lengthy suspensions and fines for their involvement in an October protest, while 11 students at NYU received one-year suspensions for a sit-in. In addition, two tenured faculty members at NYU have been declared “personae non gratae” for supporting the protest.

These severe punishments come in the wake of stricter rules for campus protests, including limitations on the use of tents and time limits on demonstrations. Advocates like Rifqa Falaneh of Palestine Legal argue that these measures have effectively silenced student protests, with many feeling deterred from speaking out against university administrations.

The pressure to crack down on campus protests has been influenced by President Donald Trump, who signed an executive order denouncing anti-Semitic discrimination on campuses in January. Trump pledged to investigate and punish racism on campuses, including cancelling student visas for those involved in protests. This has further stifled student activism, as fear of repercussions has been heightened.

Palestine Legal has been supporting students facing disciplinary actions and navigating university policies. However, Falaneh notes that the focus on suppressing protests against Trump’s policies has also inadvertently dampened student voices on other issues, creating a chilling effect on campus activism overall.

As universities grapple with balancing free speech rights and maintaining order on campus, students and advocates continue to push back against harsh punishments and restrictions that they argue undermine the essence of activism and free expression.
