Student protesters across several campuses, including the University of Minnesota and New York University, are facing harsh punishments for their actions. The pressure to crack down on campus protests has been influenced by President Donald Trump, who signed an executive order denouncing anti-Semitic discrimination on campuses in January. Trump pledged to investigate and punish racism on campuses, including cancelling student visas for those involved in protests. This has further stifled student activism, as fear of repercussions has been heightened.

However, Falaneh notes that the focus on suppressing protests against Trump’s policies has also inadvertently dampened student voices on other issues, creating a chilling effect on campus activism overall.
