Vatican confirms Pope Francis still in hospital with double lung pneumonia

Pope Francis, 88, remains hospitalized in Rome after being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs following a respiratory tract infection. Despite the complex clinical picture painted by his health condition, the Vatican reports that the pontiff is in good spirits. The polymicrobial infection related to bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitisis complicating his treatment, requiring the use of corticosteroids and antibiotics. Since his admission to the hospital for bronchitis treatment, the pope has canceled his audiences, but has received the Eucharist and continues to rest, pray, and read. Francis has had multiple health issues in recent years, including surgery for diverticulitis and a hernia, as well as falls that resulted in injuries. Despite these challenges, he remains adamant that he feels well overall and is able to carry out his duties as the leader of the Catholic Church. With the ongoing Jubilee celebration expected to bring millions of visitors to Rome, there will be increasing scrutiny on the pope’s stamina as he continues to recover in the hospital.
