Trump fires head of National Archives

President Donald Trump has dismissed the head of the National Archives, Colleen Shogan, at his direction, following through on a vow to change leadership at the agency. Shogan, who became national archivist in May 2023, was not leading the agency at the time it was involved in a criminal case accusing Trump of mishandling classified documents. Trump eventually returned some records but kept others, leading to a criminal investigation by the FBI. The case was dismissed by Trump-appointed federal judge Aileen Cannon due to constitutional concerns. Since taking office, the Trump administration has also dismissed other officials involved in investigations against the president, including Justice Department lawyers and FBI officials. Two groups of FBI agents involved in investigations have sued the DOJ, alleging they were targeted for dismissal based on a survey they were instructed to fill out. Shogan acknowledged her termination in a post on LinkedIn, expressing no regrets and stating she did her best for the National Archives and the American people. The National Archives did not provide a comment on Shogan’s dismissal, and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter.
