Dennis “DJ” Hernandez, the brother of the late NFL player Aaron Hernandez, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for making threats against the University of Connecticut and Brown University, as well as individuals. Hernandez pleaded guilty to transmitting a threat to injure. The former UConn quarterback was arrested in 2023 after a victim reported his deteriorating mental health and plans for a school shooting.
According to court documents, Hernandez communicated through Facebook Messenger about carrying out a shooting at UConn and Brown University. He threatened to harm or kill three individuals, including a state court judge. Following his arrest, Hernandez underwent a psychiatric evaluation and has been in custody since.
Upon release, Hernandez will be on three years of supervised release, during which he must continue mental health and substance abuse treatment. He is prohibited from visiting the schools and locations he threatened. The FBI and Bristol Police Department assisted in the investigation. The case raises concerns about mental health and the importance of monitoring threats online.
