A search is currently ongoing in Alaska for a plane carrying nine passengers and one pilot that did not arrive in Nome as scheduled. The Bering Air Caravan flight from Unalakleet to Nome was reported overdue to Alaska State Troopers at 4 p.m. local time. The Coast Guard has been notified, and a ground search is also taking place. Weather conditions have limited air operations, but a C-130 Coast Guard plane with advanced detection equipment is being used to search the area. Ground crews have combed the coast from Nome to Topkok, but the plane’s exact location remains unknown. The plane disappeared from radar 12 miles offshore along the coast of Nome to Topkok. Search efforts are being expanded until the plane is located. The hope is that the plane landed on land, as being in the water would be a worst-case scenario. Unalakleet is a small coastal community in Alaska, and Nome is approximately 141 miles northwest. Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage is providing flight support for the search. The community is waiting anxiously for news and hoping for a safe resolution.
