Protests in Slovakia persist against Prime Minister Fico’s pro-Russia position | Latest on Demonstrations

Large crowds of tens of thousands of people in Slovakia are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Robert Fico after his recent visit to Moscow and shift towards closer ties with Russia. Protesters across the country chanted slogans such as “Resign, resign” and “Russian agent”, with a reported 42,000 to 45,000 people gathering in Freedom Square in Bratislava.

The protests, the largest since the murder of an investigative reporter in 2018, are driven by concerns over Fico’s pro-Russia stance, with many expressing support for democracy, human rights, and EU values. Fico has accused the protesters of colluding with foreigners and Ukraine in an alleged coup attempt, a claim for which he has provided little evidence.

Critics of Fico argue that his policies threaten Slovakia’s ties with Europe and support for Ukraine, as he has criticized EU sanctions against Russia and opposed Ukraine’s NATO membership. The left-wing nationalist leader has also faced criticism for cracking down on civil society groups and LGBTQ rights.

Amid the ongoing protests and growing discontent, Fico’s future remains uncertain as calls for his resignation continue to gain momentum. With tensions escalating between the government and demonstrators, Slovakia is facing a period of political turmoil as the country grapples with its relationship with Russia and its commitment to European values.
