NBC Connecticut Reports on Hartford HealthCare’s Observance of National Wear Red Day

Middletown resident Katie Molter, 38, recently underwent open-heart surgery after experiencing symptoms of fatigue and shortness of breath. Born with a congenital heart defect, Molter knew that surgery would be necessary at some point in her life. Initially dismissed as anxiety, further examination revealed a leaking valve that required immediate attention. Dr. Sabet Hashim performed the surgery at Hartford HealthCare Heart and Vascular Institute, where Molter now works in the cardiac surgery office.

Dr. Hashim emphasized the importance of recognizing the signs of heart disease in women, noting that one in three women die of heart disease. Symptoms can also manifest differently in women compared to men, with fatigue and abdominal pain being common indicators. Molter encourages women not to ignore symptoms and to listen to their bodies.

The importance of heart health was commemorated at Hartford Hospital with a group photo for Go Red for Women Day. Molter’s own experience has allowed her to connect with patients on a personal level and advocate for women’s heart health awareness.
