Dozens in Old Lyme gathered to raise money for IRIS, a nonprofit organization helping refugees and immigrants in Connecticut. A former immigrant herself, Moya Aiken shared her story of coming to America illegally and the challenges she faced. The event, hosted by the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, aimed to raise $100,000 for IRIS, as they face funding cuts due to President Trump’s executive orders on immigration.
The community came together to support IRIS and its important work in aiding refugees and immigrants. Despite the political climate regarding immigration, participants felt strongly about helping those in need and celebrating the diversity that immigrants bring to the community. The event featured candles lit into the darkness, symbolizing hope and support for IRIS and those they serve. Senior Minister Rev. Steve Jungkeit expressed the importance of standing up for refugees and immigrants and supporting organizations like IRIS in their vital work.
