Attorneys General Demand Refunds for Cable Customers Blocked from MSG Networks
Attorneys General from Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey are demanding refunds for residents of their states who have been denied access to MSG Networks cable channels due to a contract dispute between Altice USA, the owner of Optimum. Customers in the tri-state area who paid extra for sports channels, including exclusive coverage of teams like the New York Knicks and New York Rangers, have been blocked from accessing them since January 1.
In a letter to Altice, the attorneys general demanded automatic refunds for customers who have been affected by the blackout. Connecticut Attorney General Tong stated, “consumers are paying for sports they can’t watch and they are owed immediate refunds without hassle.”
A spokesperson for Optimum claimed that the company is committed to offering affordable solutions for customers, but are facing challenges due to demands from programmers like MSG Networks. The spokesperson argued that the antiquated model of forcing distributors to pay high fees and meet minimum penetration rates is driving up the costs of video packages.
The dispute between Altice and MSG Networks highlights the challenges faced by cable companies in a rapidly changing TV landscape where consumers have more choices than ever before. The attorneys general are calling for a resolution to the conflict so that customers can access the sports content they have paid for without interruptions.
