Activists advocate for improved accessibility of public transportation on Transit Equity Day

Several groups in New Haven gathered to celebrate Rosa Parks’ birthday and advocate for increased accessibility to mass transit. A coalition representing bus drivers, climate justice activists, health advocates, and transit users came together to celebrate Transit Equity Day and call for increased access, including allowing children 18 and under to ride Connecticut buses for free.

Adrian Huq, co-founder of the New Haven Climate Movement, emphasized the importance of free child fares for children five and older, as well as new investments to improve road safety and steps towards emission reductions.

Connecticut is set to receive $11.6 million to expand the CTrail Hartford Line, which will help improve access to mass transit in the state.

The event highlighted important issues regarding transit equity and access, with a focus on making transportation more affordable and environmentally friendly. The groups involved are pushing for changes that will benefit not only individuals but the community as a whole.
