Several individuals detained in Trump’s immigration crackdown have been released in the U.S.

Since President Trump took office, his administration has ramped up immigration enforcement efforts, resulting in the arrest of over 8,000 immigrants since Inauguration Day. However, due to space constraints in detention facilities and court orders limiting indefinite detention, some of those arrested have been released back into the United States on a monitoring program. ICE does not disclose how many of those arrested are released, remain detained, or deported. The agency is limited in detaining people indefinitely if their countries refuse to take them back, leading to releases on Alternatives to Detention programs such as ankle monitors or telephonic check-ins. Trump had vowed to end catch-and-release policies but due to capacity issues and limited funding for detention beds, some migrants are being released. ICE policy prioritizes detaining immigrants considered public safety threats, with discretion used in releasing those with no serious criminal convictions. Individuals from countries that refuse to take them back, such as Venezuelans, may also be considered for release. Trump recently announced that Venezuela had agreed to take back its nationals who emigrated to the United States. Other reasons for release may include medical issues or caretaking responsibilities for children. The administration has not released anyone convicted of a serious crime.
