Oakridge Dairy, the largest dairy producer in Connecticut, has denied allegations from PETA that they mistreat their cows. PETA sent a cease-and-desist letter to the dairy producer claiming that their marketing claims regarding the wellbeing of their cows were false and misleading. PETA alleges that Oakridge Dairy confines their 2,600 cows in a concrete-floored mega-shed and keeps them away from the outdoors, leading to uncomfortable conditions for the cows.
However, Oakridge Dairy has refuted these claims, stating that they provide a high level of care and comfort for their cows. The dairy producer is part of the National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program, which upholds high animal welfare standards. In response to PETA’s claims, Oakridge Dairy conducted investigations, including participation in FARM’s Animal Care Concern Protocol and a third-party audit, which did not find any egregious animal abuse.
According to a spokesperson from Oakridge Dairy, the company ensures that their cows are healthy, comfortable, and monitored 24/7 by their team and licensed veterinarians. The spokesperson insisted that the claims made by PETA misrepresented the farm and the care provided to the cows. Oakridge Dairy maintains that they are dedicated to the wellbeing of their cows and strives to uphold the highest animal welfare standards.
