In an exclusive interview with Euronews, António Costa, the president of the European Council, reiterated the importance of the European Union defending its interests in the face of potential conflicts with the United States. Costa emphasized the need for the EU to engage with the new administration of Donald Trump in a normal and calm manner, without anxiety.
While acknowledging that frictions and clashes are inevitable even among friends, Costa expressed the EU’s commitment to maintaining a good relationship with the United States. He cited the controversy surrounding the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) introduced by Joe Biden as an example of potential conflicts between the two entities.
Costa also addressed Trump’s “America First” agenda, which includes threats to take control of Greenland and impose across-the-board tariffs on foreign goods. The EU has warned that tariffs would be met with counter-tariffs, and Costa emphasized the importance of constant dialogue with the White House to address any arising issues.
Costa also touched on other important topics such as defence spending, support for Ukraine, the future of enlargement, and relations with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Overall, he stressed the need to address problems as they arise and work towards finding solutions through dialogue and negotiation.
