Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been spotted in several Connecticut communities, causing fear and concern among residents. While confirmed reports of ICE activity have been made in East Hartford, Stamford, New London, and Windham, there is also worry in Hartford even though agents have not been seen there. Rev. Roberto Calcano of the Faith Temple Assembly of God in Hartford has been reassuring parishioners and distributing cards outlining their rights in case of an encounter with ICE.
In Willimantic, the police department confirmed the presence of ICE agents but stated they were operating legally. The Trump administration has stated they will prioritize detaining undocumented immigrants who have committed serious crimes. Some Republican lawmakers in Connecticut, such as Rep. Vincent Candelora, support this approach in order to make streets safer.
Despite ICE presence in some communities, the police department is urging residents to continue their normal activities for now. NBC Connecticut has reached out to ICE for comment but has not yet received a response.
