White House halts federal aid to prioritize Trump’s agenda – NBC Connecticut

President Trump has issued a freeze on domestic and foreign federal aid in an effort to halt funding for causes that do not align with his agenda. The memo sent out by the White House Office of Management and Budget instructed federal agencies to pause all activities related to financial assistance that may conflict with Trump’s priorities, including foreign aid, non-governmental organizations, diversity initiatives, and environmental programs.

While Social Security, Medicare, and direct payments to individuals are exempt from the freeze, billions of dollars in aid could be affected. The move has sparked criticism from Democratic leaders in Congress, who argue that it undermines their authority over federal spending. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called the actions “lawlessness” and warned of potential consequences for American communities.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker also denounced the unilateral decision as unconstitutional and pledged to protect programs that benefit working families, children, and seniors in his state. Trump defended the freeze during a speech at a Republican retreat in Miami, emphasizing his administration’s efforts to undo policies implemented by the Biden administration. The move is part of a series of executive orders signed by Trump aimed at aligning federal aid with his policy agenda.
