Lyme Man Suspected in Fatal Boat Crash to Appear in Court
Clayton Hackling, 26, of Lyme, is facing charges for a boat crash in Old Saybrook on Labor Day that resulted in the deaths of three individuals. Police allege that Hackling was speeding and under the influence when the boat hit a break wall at the mouth of the Connecticut River.
Nine individuals were onboard the boat, with six rescued by emergency crews. Unfortunately, Christopher Hallahan, 34, of Westbrook, Ian Duchemin, 25, of Oakdale, and Ryan Britagna, 24, of Waterford, lost their lives in the crash.
The warrant for the case revealed that Duchemin had expressed feeling unsafe just moments before the crash. Hackling’s blood alcohol content was found to be more than twice the legal limit, and the boat was traveling at a high speed in a no-wake zone just before the incident.
Hackling is facing charges of manslaughter and reckless operation of a vessel while under the influence. He was arrested last week and has since been released on bond. Hackling is scheduled to appear in court today to face the charges.
