Mystic Aquarium Welcomes Birth of Critically Endangered African Penguins – NBC Connecticut

Four critically endangered African penguin chicks recently hatched at Mystic Aquarium, the offspring of two first-time parent pairs. The chicks were born in early January, and their growth has been described as remarkable. While the aquarium does not name its penguins, they are identified by the colors on their tags. This species, facing a 97% decline in population, is at an extremely high risk of extinction. Mystic Aquarium highlighted that the African penguins can grow to about 24 to 27 inches tall and weigh eight to 10 pounds, feeding on fish like anchovies, pilchards, and sardines. The recent hatching of these four chicks at the aquarium is a significant development for the conservation efforts of these endangered animals. With a potential disappearance from the wild within the next decade, every new birth is a hopeful step towards preserving this species. Mystic Aquarium continues to support the growth and well-being of these penguins as part of their conservation efforts.
