Man accused in fatal Old Saybrook boat collision makes court appearance

Clayton Hackling, the man charged in the Old Saybrook boat crash that resulted in three deaths over Labor Day weekend in 2024, appeared in court on Tuesday. The 26-year-old faces multiple charges, including second-degree manslaughter and reckless operation of a vessel while under the influence. Investigators stated that Hackling was operating the 31-foot boat when the crash occurred, leaving nine people on board. Six individuals were rescued with serious injuries, while three passengers were found dead in the following days.

The arrest warrant revealed that GPS data showed the boat’s speed was 49 mph moments before the collision, and Hackling had a blood alcohol level of .17g%, well above the legal limit. He faces multiple charges related to the incident and has been released on a $350,000 bond. The case has been transferred to New London Superior Court, with the next court date scheduled for February 11. Old Saybrook residents are calling for increased water safety measures following the tragic accident.
