The state of Connecticut has released guidance for school districts regarding how to handle Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity on school grounds. This advice comes in response to reports of ICE agents being seen in various parts of the state, including Stamford, Windham, East Hartford, and New London. The fear and anxiety within the immigrant community have been palpable, with some individuals choosing to avoid going to church, school, or work out of fear of ICE activity. The state Education Department has recommended that schools develop policies for dealing with immigration enforcement activities, such as asking agents for identification and warrant.
Members of the community and state officials have expressed concern about the impact of these immigration enforcement activities, with a focus on ensuring that productive citizens are not needlessly targeted. However, the Trump administration has stated that their priority is detaining undocumented immigrants who have committed serious crimes. Despite attempts to reach out to ICE for confirmation and a statement, there has been no response yet.
