Report states Duck DNA found in engines of crashed Jeju Air plane

The preliminary report on the Jeju Air plane crash in South Korea revealed that both engines of the Boeing 737-800 contained duck remains, specifically DNA from Baikal teals. The report did not provide any conclusive reasons for why the plane landed without deploying its landing gear and why the flight data recorders stopped recording. The crash resulted in the deaths of all but two of the 181 people and crew on board, with the aircraft overshooting the runway and crashing into an embankment. The investigation will involve examining the engines, analyzing data, and investigating the possibility of bird strikes and the role of the localizers in the airport’s navigation system. The report also noted that the pilots were aware of a bird flock on the plane’s final approach, but the exact timing of the bird strike remains unconfirmed. The report did not determine why the Cockpit Voice Recorder and Flight Data Recorder stopped recording just before the pilots declared an emergency. The International Civil Aviation Organization requires a preliminary report within 30 days of an accident, with a final report to be made public within 12 months. The South Korean authorities have shared their findings with relevant agencies in Thailand, the United States, and France, which are involved with the plane and engine manufacturers.
