NIH Research Remains Critical Despite Confusion Over Trump Administration Directives

The National Institutes of Health’s acting director, Dr. Matthew Memoli, reassured staff scientists in an email that ongoing clinical trials can continue as scheduled despite concerns about the future of research at the agency. The uncertainty arose after the Trump administration paused all communication from federal health agencies and suspended government travel, causing chaos among NIH staff members. Memoli clarified that research participants can still take part in clinical trials at the NIH Clinical Center and at NIH-funded facilities, which conduct more than a thousand clinical trials annually.

While ongoing clinical trials can proceed, funding for new projects remains on hold, leaving scientists unable to start new research on various conditions including Covid and Ebola. The NIH awards over 60,000 grants each year, supporting at least 300,000 researchers. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, who has criticized the NIH’s handling of the Covid pandemic, has been nominated by President Donald Trump to be the next NIH director, although a Senate hearing has not been scheduled.

Memoli expects additional guidance from the Department of Health and Human Services this week, and the external communications pause is set to last until Saturday. Despite the uncertainty surrounding new research funding, ongoing clinical trials can continue with participants able to travel to the NIH Clinical Center for treatment.
