Legislators strive to legalize in-state sports betting on Connecticut college teams

State lawmakers in Connecticut are considering legalizing betting on college sports teams, including in-state schools like UConn and Yale. Rep. Tony Scott introduced a bill to allow residents to bet on these teams, which is currently in the Law Committee of the General Assembly. Fans and sportsbook managers are in support of the bill, believing it would generate more revenue and bring betting out of the underground. However, the bill was previously met with opposition in 2024 over concerns about student athlete safety and potential match fixing. Rep. Scott argued that other states allowing such bets have not seen any incidents of point shaving or game fixing. Some residents, like Kyeam Cauley, are in favor of the bill, believing that college athletes play hard and could potentially win them money. Although the state currently allows betting on in-state teams during postseason play, this bill would expand those opportunities. Local colleges and universities have not yet commented on the proposal. As the discussion continues, updates will be provided by WFSB.
