ICE arrests nearly 1,200 individuals in a single day, reports NBC Connecticut

Immigration authorities conducted a massive arrest operation, detaining close to 1,200 individuals in just one day. According to a senior Trump administration official, almost half of those arrested did not have criminal records. Of the total arrests, only 613 were considered “criminal arrests,” while the rest were nonviolent offenders or individuals who had only crossed the border without authorization.

Eight of the arrests were classified as “Worst Criminals Arrested,” including two gang members. Despite Trump’s emphasis on targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records, a significant number of those detained on Sunday had no criminal history and were solely apprehended due to their immigration status.

The issue of detainers lodged by ICE was also raised, with 853 individuals facing possible deportation following their arrest on other criminal charges. The increasing enforcement actions have led to concerns about the impact on non-criminal individuals caught up in immigration raids. The implementation of sanctuary city policies has become a point of contention as local jurisdictions refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement efforts.
