Connecticut Department of Agriculture confirmed a second case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in New Haven County after a backyard flock contracted bird flu. The first case was reported in New London County. The Department euthanized all birds on the property to prevent the spread of the disease, with no human cases reported in the state so far.
Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt emphasized the importance of flock owners taking biosecurity measures to protect their birds and human health. Highly contagious and without effective treatment, H5N1 poses a risk to domestic poultry.
Symptoms of H5N1 infection in birds include sudden deaths, respiratory issues, and changes in behavior. Flock owners are urged to report any unusual signs to the Department of Agriculture or USDA.
While the risk of human transmission remains low, precautions such as proper handling and cooking of poultry are essential. Surveillance is ongoing, with no reports of the virus spreading to humans, livestock, or other domestic animals in Connecticut.
