Mayor of New Haven reassures dedication to being a city that is inclusive

New Haven city officials, led by Mayor Justin Elicker, expressed their opposition to the recent executive orders issued by the Trump administration during an event at the New Haven Pride Center. The city also unveiled an LGBTQ+ resource guide on their website to support residents in the face of the new policies. Ward 9 Alder Caroline Tanbee Smith emphasized New Haven’s commitment to being a welcoming city for all. The Pride Center has reported an increase in calls from concerned residents seeking assistance and resources due to the incoming administration’s policies.

In response to Trump’s remarks on gender, Elicker made it clear that New Haven would not adopt a binary view of gender like the federal government. However, Connecticut Republican Party Chair Ben Proto criticized Elicker and other state leaders for being out of touch with the electorate and praised Trump’s economic message. Elicker countered that Trump did not have a clear mandate from voters, noting that his predecessor Kamala Harris had nearly equal support.

In a possible move to challenge the administration, Elicker suggested that New Haven could explore legal action, following the lead of other cities like San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
