A fatal fire in Waterbury last weekend led to a police investigation on Wightman Place on Friday. The fire was caused by an explosion inside a home on Horseshoe Drive, resulting in the critical condition and subsequent death of Thomas Cianciola, 56. Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in determining the cause of the explosion and fire, with a state police bomb squad vehicle seen in the area. However, Waterbury police assured the community that there was no current threat or danger.
As a precaution, Hopeville Elementary School implemented a shelter-in-place at the recommendation of the Waterbury Police Department due to activity in the surrounding area. The shelter-in-place was lifted later in the day. The investigation is ongoing, and the public is advised to remain vigilant while police work to determine the cause of the tragic incident.
