WSOC excels, outplays Rutgers in NCAA First Round

The UConn women’s soccer team secured a 2-1 victory against No. 6 seed Rutgers in the NCAA First Round, advancing to the Second Round. Goals from Chioma Okafor and Lucy Cappadona propelled the Huskies to victory, with solid defense and goalkeeping from Kaitlyn Mahoney. This win marks UConn’s fourth consecutive NCAA First Round victory and their first win away from Morrone Stadium since 2009. With a six-game win streak, the Huskies have also secured their first NCAA win since 2016.

In the first half, Johnson provided a crucial assist to Okafor for the opening goal, followed by a header from Cappadona off a corner kick by Ryder. Rutgers managed to score a goal in the 70th minute, but UConn held strong to secure the win. The team’s game management was key in their victory.

Next up, the Huskies will face No. 3 seed Stanford in the NCAA Second Round on Friday, November 22 at the University of Arkansas. This upcoming match will be a test for UConn as they look to continue their winning streak in the tournament.
