Stone Academy reaches preliminary settlement with Connecticut attorney general

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong announced a preliminary settlement with Stone Academy and its owners after the school closed in February 2023, leaving over 800 students uncertain about their future. The state secured a $5 million prejudgment remedy in March 2024, addressing concerns about the defendants’ ability to pay former students. The settlement includes strict requirements for Stone Academy and its owners to make things right for the affected students. Former operator Joseph Bierbaum would be barred from employment in higher education for five years as part of the agreement.

Attorney David Slossberg, representing former students, stated that while nothing can fully make them whole, the settlement is the best outcome under the circumstances. The settlement proposes cash payments proportionate to the credits conferred by Stone Academy, with specific requirements for additional class members to qualify for payment. A judge will review and potentially approve the settlement in the next step. The attorneys representing Bierbaum and Stone Academy declined to comment on the matter.
