Stone Academy awards $5 million in settlement grants and other assistance to students

In February 2023, Stone Academy, a private practical nursing school, closed, affecting nearly 1,000 students. Almost two years later, a preliminary settlement was announced by Attorney General William Tong, offering $5 million in relief to the students. The settlement includes a remedial program and $150,000 for exam preparation. The former operator of Stone Academy, Joseph Bierbaum, will be barred from higher education business for five years. Furthermore, lawsuits against the state and Stone Academy’s owners were resolved in the settlement.

The students are hopeful that the settlement will bring closure to the difficult situation they have faced. It is seen as a path forward to resolve the matter and provide peace to those affected. The agreement also includes withdrawing legal action against the state. There are ongoing efforts to secure financial relief for the students, including a request for federal approval to discharge their student loans. The community and legislators are working together to support these students and help them get their careers back on track.
