Special counsel Jack Smith steps down

Special counsel Jack Smith has resigned from the Justice Department, with his final report on President Trump’s alleged involvement in election interference expected to be released soon. The report was submitted on January 7, 2025, and Smith left the Department on January 10. Trump had been indicted on charges related to election interference but the case was dropped after he was elected in 2024, as the Justice Department does not prosecute sitting presidents. Smith was appointed in 2022 by Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Trump’s efforts to overturn the election and mishandling of classified documents. Trump had pleaded not guilty to all charges and had criticized Smith, stating that he would fire him once in office. The restrictions on releasing part of Smith’s report have been temporarily blocked by a court order. Smith’s investigation was also dismissed in July 2024 based on claims of unlawfulness in his appointment and funding. Trump’s spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment on Smith’s resignation.
