As winter weather sets in, many people are eager to hit the ice for some skating or hockey. However, it is important to ensure safety while out on frozen ponds or lakes. Fire officials in Glastonbury, Connecticut emphasize the importance of being cautious and aware of potential dangers on the ice.
Chief Michael Thurz warns that ice thickness can vary, and it is crucial to only skate in areas that are being monitored and deemed safe. Signs are posted at Eastbury Pond to indicate whether it is safe to be on the ice. Additionally, the Farmington Fire Department advises that the ice should be at least four to six inches thick, the weather should be no more than 40 degrees, and signs of water on the edges indicate unsafe conditions.
Officials recommend always skating with a buddy, having a phone on hand for emergencies, and knowing what to do in case someone falls through the ice. It is always better to be safe than sorry when enjoying winter activities on the ice.
