NBC Connecticut: Animal Control Urges Pet Owners to Beware of False Claims regarding Lost Dogs

Wallingford Animal Control is warning pet owners about a recent incident where someone falsely claimed a lost dog as theirs. A good Samaritan found the dog, Gucci, and brought him to animal control where he was reunited with his owner within three hours. However, another person tried to take Gucci home by providing fake veterinarian documents. Animal Control Officer Mitch Gibbs warns that there are people out there who try to claim free dogs or sell them illegally. He advises that found animals should be brought to animal control first and then posted on Facebook to find the rightful owners. Pet owners are urged to update their pet’s tags with correct information and consider microchipping their pets for identification. The Connecticut Humane Society also emphasizes the importance of proper channels for exchanging pets to prevent scams and advises reaching out to various resources if a pet is lost or found. Wallingford Animal Control is investigating the incident and may press charges against the person who tried to claim Gucci as theirs.
