Connecticut Settles $5M Lawsuit With Stone Academy and Owners

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong announced a preliminary $5 million settlement with the defunct Stone Academy and its owners over unfair and deceptive conduct. The for-profit nursing school had abruptly closed, leaving students in limbo after failing to deliver as promised. An investigation revealed that Stone Academy took in millions in revenues while not meeting its obligations to students. The settlement includes compensation for impacted students through a private class action process, with additional funds set aside to help former students prepare for exit exams. The state Department of Public Health will end licensure investigations based on attendance at Stone Academy, and efforts are underway to discharge student loan debt related to the school. The settlement also includes provisions prohibiting former owner and Paier College president Joseph Bierbaum from working in higher education for five years. State Senator Henri Martin praised the Attorney General’s efforts to seek justice for Stone Academy students and help them get their careers back on track.
