President Biden criticized Meta’s decision to end its fact-checking program, calling it “shameful” as it would allow false information to reach millions of people. This comes after California Governor Gavin Newsom also expressed concerns about misinformation surrounding wildfires. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the change, citing user-driven systems and relaxed rules on political content. Zuckerberg also mentioned that Biden administration officials had pressured Facebook to remove content, which he found unreasonable. In response to these concerns, the White House did not immediately comment. Last year, Zuckerberg admitted to feeling pressured by the government to remove posts about Covid-19, which he now considers wrong. The Meta CEO also revealed that the company had donated to Donald Trump’s inaugural fund, leading to questions about political influences on the platform.
